10. Reflection:
One of my most challenging moments in this class was when I started being aware about the amount of homework and hours I needed to commit to be on time with my homework and on time with other assignments I have for my other classes. It has been more than twenty years since I graduated in my home country. Then, I moved here to the United States, I got married and have two children. My schedule was already packed. The first week of classes, I remember being in class and I looked at my schedule. Then, I realized I registered for fourteen units instead of nine. Today, I feel very proud that I never dropped any classes and that I was able to finish most of my assignments. Another challenging moment is at the time I have to do my homework, even if I want to do it and finish it, my body is so tired. Although I have been feeling sleepy during the day and suffer headaches because of my reduced sleep hours, I have complied and not been absent from my job. Overall I feel happy about what I have learned and accomplished in this semester. At this moment, I know that I have improved my writing, but there is a lot more that I have to learn. I hope one day I can write my book about my experiences in life, and help others thrive to difficult situations in life.

The greatest concern in the process that immigrants must face
Everywhere we turn our eyes, there is always a concern about immigration. If we turn the tv, or we are watching news in different platforms, there is always someone who is speaking about immigration issues and how they have an effect in our lives. The greatest challenges in the process that immigrants have to overcome when coming to the United States are border security, deportations and at the very end, there is something that is not less defiant, their own social integration. Immigrants face challenges every day and that impact in our society in a way nothing has never done before. The Unites States is a country with a wide range diversity in cultures, traditions, languages, and because it is nurtured by the immigrant population. On the other hand, the United States is a country that is changing its immigration policies continuously. This change from open borders from the Biden-Harris administration contrast the current. This is a country that the law is enforced, and the Supreme Law of the Land is followed. Laws that in other countries are damaged by corruption and politics most of the time. This does not mean that corruption do not exist here in the Unites States, but there are check and balances. Those politics influence the community in the way that how to face these concerns as a society. It is imperative to know the challenges they face, and It is time to deep analyze the greatest concerns and how immigrants face this situation in their lives.
The border between Mexico and the United States is the most transited border in the world and the most dangerous. Border security is the top of concerns for the present administration. The border that divides Mexico with Unites States has 1,954 miles. The border that separates both countries has been tried to close because it’s implications with security, economy and education. The first is referred to the criminal activity that occurs in this border; where, humans, drugs, weapons are money are trafficked every day. The river that limits Mexico and the U.S. has extreme weather conditions, people die every day trying to cross over, trying to be part of this society. But nothing stops migrants to come to the Unites States. The criminal groups and mafias convoke people in other countries doing a false marketing about the present situation in America. Secondly, the border expands through the sea and air. Most of the undocumented immigrants have “crossed the border” legally through a visitor visa or student visa, etc. There is a belief in our society that immigrants most of the time through Mexico but sometimes this is not the case. Migrants come from different countries and come overseas. The importance of border security that divide the U.S. with the world is because of the integrity of the people who cross the border. Secondly, most of the time, local communities are afraid immigrants come to America to receive public benefits and to take the jobs of Americans. Third, and not less important is the public education system immigrants receive that are paid with the money of tax contributors.
Now that immigrants finally cross the border, there is an important issue about how they will incorporate in the community and how they will contribute to the society, but they are not able to get a legal status, and they could face deportation. President Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday that undocumented immigrants should not have trials before being deported. "We're getting them out, and I hope we get cooperation from the courts because you know, we have thousands of people that are ready to go out, and you can't have a trial for all of these people," he said. As it is referred in the article by Los Angeles Times. Millions of immigrants who live in the United States could face and expedited removal without having a due process. The population is afraid by those statements, and they are looking for legal advice who prevent them to be taken away from this country where have built their lives and contribute to the society.
Then all the people that is left behind in their country without any possibility of fixing their legal situation face the social integration. There are barriers as learning the language, the cultures and the laws that need to be follow. People who immigrate to this country most of the times are very well-educated persons who have studied and are looking a better future for their families in this country full of entrepreneurs. Most of native American believe that immigrants can be treated as slaves and are able to work in precarious conditions. In the article, Check, Please! Health and Working Conditions in San Francisco Chinatown Restaurants mentions how the workers are being exploited and abused by their employers. Also, how they confront and resist the common situation of living in such a small single room apartments and paying excessive rents after receiving less than the minimum wage for all the worked hours during the week. As a result, locals and immigrants in these communities face the detriments in their lifestyle, health and living conditions.
In the video as “American as Chop Suey” by _______ relates the suffering of a lot of Chinese immigrants who come to this country and be part of the population. Although, to come to America immigrants sometimes pay excessively to cross the border and sell their properties only for the with the purpose of having a job offer at the time they have a foot in American soil. A lot of Chinese workers are paid as little of ____ and hour and work six to seven days a week with no brakes wither sick paid leave. They come to this country, but they are not having the same opportunities as natives. For the only reason, they are afraid and are not able to communicate because of language barriers. As consequence immigrants do not know what resources are available for them and are continuously abused. In addition to this, they do not the laws that can protected them against their deportation and those laws who could help them to become legal permanent residents. Natives Americans a lot of the times belief that immigrants have come to replace Americans in their job. There is no American who is willing to work under those conditions, without brakes and to be victims of labor abuse.
After all the information reviewed and border security, deportation and social integration; there is a lot of work to be done in our communities to conscientized about how immigrants as part of the society can change the perspective and how we can give a solution to these problems that deteriorate our lives and left us in fear and anxiety.

The Greatest Concerns Immigrants Must Face
Everywhere we turn our eyes, there is always a concern about immigration. The greatest challenges in the process that immigrants have to overcome when coming to the United States are border security, deportations, and at the very end, there is something that is not less defiant, their own social integration. Immigrants face challenges every day, and that impacts in our society in a way nothing has never done before. The Unites States is a country with a wide range of diversity in cultures, traditions, and languages do to it being nurtured by the immigrant population. On the other hand, the United States is a country that is changing its immigration policies continuously leading communities in fear and anxiety. This change from open borders by the Biden-Harris administration contradicts the current policy. The Trump administration is arresting and deporting undocumented immigrants without the due process to their home country and others to a hostile country where they will never be able to exit, and where their human rights are not protected. America is a country where the law is enforced, and the Supreme Law of the Land is followed. Laws that in other countries are damaged by corruption and policies most of the time. This does not mean that corruption does not exist here in the Unites States, but there have been checks and balances until now. Those changes in current policies influence the community in the way that we face our daily lives as a society. It is imperative to know the challenges immigrants face in each stage, and it is time to deeply analyze the greatest concerns and how immigrants confront this situation in their lives. There are concerns that have negative effect in our community like border security, the policies in deportation, and the social integration of immigrants, and we as society need to develop a path to improve our society, and stop prejudgement.
The border between Mexico and the United States is the most transited border in the world and the most dangerous. Border security is the top concern for the present administration. The border that divides Mexico from the Unites States is two thousand miles in length. The border that separates both countries has been tried to close because it’s implications with security, economy and education. The first is referred to the criminal activity that occurs in this border where humans, drugs, weapons and money are trafficked every day. The river that limits Mexico and the U.S. has extreme weather conditions. People die every day trying to cross over because they want to be part of this society. Nothing stops immigrants to come to the Unites States. The criminal groups and mafias convoke people in other countries doing false marketing about the present immigrant situation in America. There is a belief in our society that immigrants most of the time cross through Mexico although this is not the case. The border expands through the sea and air. Immigrants come from different countries. Many of the undocumented immigrants have “crossed the border” legally through a visitor visa or student visa. Third, most of the time, local communities are afraid immigrants that arrived at U.S. soil would be able to receive public benefits and take the jobs of born Americans. Also, not less important is the public education system immigrants receive that is paid with tax contributors’ money. This last one, many Americans misunderstand and believe that immigrants do not contribute to this country, but this is not true. Many Americans in need of public benefits do resist to receive help. Although, immigrants who do not have a legal status in this country are not able to receive public benefits.
Now that immigrants finally cross the border, there is an important issue about how they will incorporate in the community and how they will be able to contribute to the society. Although some individuals have entered the country legally and complied with immigration laws, they may never be able to obtain legal status. Some immigrants have arrived through a program from Biden-Harris administration, who allowed them to come to the U.S. being paroled at the border. Now, they are facing expedited removal if they arrived less than two years ago. Another group of immigrants are the ones that arrived illegally, and do not have a qualifying relative to file a waiver in their behalf. Despite, those immigrants have an immediate relative, they will never be able to receive a Legal Permanent Status. All of them, could face deportation. President Trump has told reporters at the White House on Tuesday that undocumented immigrants should not have trials before being deported. The population is afraid by those statements, and they are looking for legal advice who prevent them to be taken away from this country where they have built their lives over the years and have contributed to the society.
Third and not less defiant is the people that stay in this country without any possibility of fixing their legal situation. They must face the social integration. The most common barriers are learning the language, the culture, and the laws that need to be followed. People who immigrate to this country most of the times are very well-educated in their own country. They are persons who have studied and are looking a bright and better future for their families in this land full of entrepreneurs. Most of born American believe that immigrants can be treated as slaves and are able to work in precarious conditions. In the article, Check, Please! Health and Working Conditions in San Francisco Chinatown Restaurants mentions how the workers are being exploited and abused by their employers. In addition, this article describes how they confront and resist the common situation of living in such a small single room apartments and paying excessive rents after receiving less than the minimum wage for all the worked hours during the week. In the video as “American as Chop Suey” by Katie Salisbury relates the suffering of a lot of Chinese immigrants who come to this country and to be part of the population. Although, to come to America immigrants sometimes pay excessively to be smuggled into U.S. They need to sell their properties only with the purpose of having a job offer at the time they have a foot in American soil. A lot of Chinese workers are paid less than the minimum wage and work six to seven days a week with no brakes either paid sick leave. Immigrant who come to this country do not have the same opportunities as people with a legal status. Because they most of the time do not know English language, they are not able to communicate. Therefore, immigrants do not know what resources are available for them and are continuously abused. It is nnfortunate that they do not know the laws that can protected them against their deportation. They do not know the laws who could help them to become legal permanent residents. Americans a lot of the times belief that immigrants have come to replace Americans in their job. There is no American who is willing to work under those conditions, without brakes and to be victims of labor abuse.
After all the information reviewed and border security, deportation, and social integration there is a lot of work to be done in our communities to conscientized about how immigrants as part of the society. Also, how can we change the perspective, and how can we give a solution to these problems that deteriorate our lives and left us in fear and anxiety. What can we do as a society? Where is our human sense? There is a lot of work to be done, and nothing compares to the suffering these immigrant communities is facing in these moments. We need to understand that their need to immigrate and leave everything behind in their home country is because of the only illusion they want to come to this beautiful country and become a contributor. Many of them immigrate to reunite with the family member that came first. Immigrants have left everything behind, and most of the time they are willing to do their best. Although, sometimes they are abused, trafficked, and are victims of the system. Finally, our society need to be more empathic about all immigrants that are here without legal situation. Even though many of them pay taxes and they contribute to this country, they will never be able to get any help or public benefits unless they fix their legal situation that in most of the cases this will never be able to fix it.

How immigration myths damage our society.
Through the course of humanity migration has been always a part of our history. People have had the need to emigrate for a better place to live. The principal motivation of migration at the beginning of human history was access to basic resources as food, shelter, and water. Today, almost everyone on the earth yearns to come to the United States and live an American dream, because people have the feeling there is no place better that the U.S. Because of that, millions of people emigrated believing the U.S offers better opportunities. Migrants come through the desert, ports of entry, air, and ocean to cross to the United States. Some of them, have left everything in their countries to come to a land of opportunities and resources. Although, there are a lot of discrepancies of how people have immigrated to American soil and how easier was some decades ago. Today’s policies and regulations are stricter and tougher every day, making uneasy to migrate to the U.S. which has become one of the scariest and defiant things one could ever imagine. Definitively, everything has changed recently and the information we received often is based on myths and misconceptions of few people. We need to be very careful about the sources and information we collect and not to be a victim of a single story, as Chimamanda Adichie mentions on the video “The Danger of a Single Story”, because our society needs accurate information to combat stereotypes.
First and foremost, all of us at some point, have heard myths about immigration. In the article “Ten Myths about Immigration,” the second of the tenth mentions “It’s ease to enter the United States legally. My ancestors did; why can’t immigrants today?” Contrary to the belief that entering the U.S. legally is easy; maybe because, at the beginning of U.S. history the borders were open, but as of today the process of becoming legal permanent resident could take years, even decades. There is a complex process and lengthy to come to American soil legally. The Department of Homeland Security through all its agencies, has enough control of information and technology that makes so difficult to enter the United States. If someone wants to come to the United States as a permanent resident, one of the options is through a family petition that in most of the cases could take from two years or more that twenty. This timeline depends on who files the petition to whom. Another way to get a legal permanent residence is through a lottery visa, based on luck and country of birth. Secondly, applying for a visitor’s visa is a long process, that involves a long and detailed questionnaire, fingerprints, biometrics, and background checks, and a one to two year wait to have an interview scheduled. The third option is to come without any permit, parole, or visa. This idea is the most difficult, dangerous and life threatening. Trying to come to the United States illegally put life at risk. No matter how you come by land, air, or sea, all the options are very dangerous. Reyna Grande in her book The Distance Between Us, describes how hard is to come to the Unites States. Grande, in her book she mentions she and her family cross the border by walking through the dessert from Tijuana to San Ysidro, California, and narrates how she found “…a man lying not too far from me. I thought he was asleep…”(154). This is one of many histories that are around in our society. At some point, our ancestors were able to come here easily because there were no policies, rules, technology either information as it is now a days. Definitively, to come here to the U.S. is not easy.
Moreover, we collectively hear myths every day about how immigrants have come to this country and damaged our society. Based on the single histories we follow through algorithms in social media, we as a community need to research and verify the information, we gather with the purpose of not having misinformation that could be used negatively and damage our society. One example of the negative consequences of myths is how often people is marginalized and abused by their employers. Discrimination is another danger our society experiments daily, how often immigrants are not treated equally based on their skin color or physiognomy, race, or religion. The vast majority of our society relates to immigrants as dangerous human beings that do not deserve the same opportunities, and do not deserve any right. Health insurance is not for everyone in this country, only people who have a legal status is able to receive medical attention. This presumption of “knowledge” leads us to misinformation as it is also shown on “The danger of a Single Story” by Chimamanda Adichie (8:21) she mentions "...how she used to think about Mexicans who were fleecing health care system and being arrested at the U.S. border”. Then, when she observed Mexican population enjoying their cities, having conversations with friends and how Mexican really live in Mexico, she realized Mexicans were victims of a single story.
Based on these examples, we as a community, need not to be attached to by a single story and verify the information we received from our own sources. On the other hand, there is a possible solution to misinformation, tergiversated or polarized information. We as a community could use as an example of Hudda Ibrahim and her husband, a Somali Refugee that created a community in Minnesota, by organizing dine and dialogue in their community to show the society about Somalis, and their culture. These events have helped the community in Minnesota where there is the largest population of Somalis in the United States. Moreover, there is also an example of how these events “dine and dialogue” request the attendants to make questions that people usually people do not ask. This event is such an example of how the community could benefit from attending to these events to interact, learn, and disregard myths.
Finally, even when all the people around the world think and perceive the Unites States as the most wished dream, sometimes information we received by is tergiversated and polarized. This fact leads us in myths that affect our society. Immigrants who come to live the American dream suffer from the systemic misinformation and are victims of our society. There is a negative impact into our society, if we as a community continue to think myths are true. What can we do as a society to combat these systemic stereotypes? I truly believe there is hope for immigrants that come to this country because all people that have left everything behind also bring the best of their own to contribute our damaged society. We should the example to Hudda Ibrahim and some many others who fight misinformation. Let’s take those resources and opportunities and create the best for our communities. The best thing we can do is to stop believing in myths because myths damage our society.
